I only ever use yum/ rpm at the CLI to manage packages, so can I safely remove the software which

a) Provides the GUI for package management; and
b) Keeps checking for updates all the time; usually when i am trying to do something else.

If so which packages should I remove?

Thanks

You can just disable it in System > Preferences > Startup Applications. If you really want to remove it, try "sudo yum erase PackageKit:". At the moment, that will erase gnome-color-manager along with a few other PackageKit related dependencies. Disabling it has certain advantages.

With the "extra" advantage of regaining some hdd space that can be used for things more meaningful to you. :)

I did a # yum erase PackageKit and it got rid of over 10M of stuff!
And got rid of the annoying update checks to!

Cheers chaps.
