View Full Version : Authentication error in X

As of today I can't log into GNOME or KDE with F12(32bit) anymore.

I boot up to the login-screen and enter the CORRECT password (sure!), but I get the message "authentication error" and the login-screen stays there unchanged.

Logging into the console works perfectly.
And yesterday evening everything still worked perfectly. I had logged in normally, ran the update (I think it included some SELinux-update), and turned the computer off via the "shutdown -P [time]" command. When I started the PC today, I couldn't log in anymore.

I'm pretty clueless as to what to do, so please help!

a few things in addition/correction to what I wrote above:

I can NOT log into my user-account in the console. But I can log in as root and than switch to the user account. From there I can also start GNOME via "startx". I can still not log in via the normal login-screen though.

It seems like the system may have been turned of the hard way by an empty battery before the problem occured.

Try so:

# yum downgrade gdm
# reboot

perfect! Thank you! It works again :)

I guess I should exclude gdm from the system-updates for a while?...

Do that manually and check gdm version every time update system.
