When booting Fedora 11, my system hangs for a very long time on starting udev. Sometimes I get an I/O error. However, my hardware is fine. I do eventually get in to the system. Any idea's?

Cheers.

Sometimes I get an I/O errorCheck if dmesg contain error.
Also check if running too services useless at boot.

OK as a newbie to Fedora, how does one go about that. Sorry but I've just come over from Ubuntu.

Try disabling the floppy drive in your computer BIOS. There is a known issue with slow bootup when detecting some floppy controllers, especially if you have no floppy but have it enabled in the BIOS.

I do have a floppy drive. Mind you I could disable it I don't ever use it. Who does these days?

chrispche, search error in dmesg output:

# dmesg | grep error

to check services:

# system-config-services

Disable sendmail if you don't use it (almost no home user would):

chkconfig sendmail off
service sendmail stop

or while you're using system-config-services (post 6) you can turn if off there.

In some cases sendmail can cause a delay like that

As marko mentioned sendmail is often a culprit if it can't resolve its host name, I normally update the startup script file to stuff a & at the end of the startup command until I get round to fixing it.

Another possibility is that I also have noticed that if the network interface isn't configured correctly FC11 startup hangs for 10-15 minutes, although I use statis ipaddrs. But if you use dhcp to get an ipaddr and your router is turned off when you boot that could be it; or if after boot ifconfig shows your interface doesn't have an ipaddr set thats possibly it.
