Hi folks,

What is 'smartd'?

Each time on booting, following warning indicated.
....
Starting smartd [failed]

However there is no noticeable problem in operating FedoraCore2

Please advice how to fix it.

TIA

I believe it has something to do with the monitoring of hard drives.

Here's how the service describes itself

"Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology (SMART) Daemon"

I got this from the setup (setup as root) utility, under services. I have it turned off.

I think it more specifically has to do with monirtoring you hard drive if it has the S.M.A.R.T capability turned on in the bios. check you bios and hard drive setting
/sbin/hdparm -I /dev/<harddrive-name> you hard drive name is usually hda, but if you use a sata drive it will be sda. you should look for a section like
Enabled Supported:
.
.
.
* SMART feature set If you hard drive or bios don't have the feature, you should disable the service.
