Hello there. :)

I got a message today telling me that there where 78 updates available. One of them was Kernel 2.6.29.6-213.fc11.i586 and when I installed all the updates and rebooted, my startup time was very slow. And when I checked the boot.log I noticed this:

Enabling the nvidia driver: *** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/python: free(): invalid pointer: 0x00f0e24a ***

How can I solve this?

Ps: The reason I know it's the kernel, is because a friend got a similar problem. (Only when updating to that kernel.)

I'm not sure where you got the kernel from. My guess is that you don't have update-testing repo active and that might be the cause. Try
su
yum update --enablerepo=u*g --enablerepo=rpm*g and see what happens. You might post the output here or on fpaste.org if unsure.

This is what happens:

http://fpaste.org/paste/19698

If you want, I can change the sys language to english and run the command again.

Edit: I got the kernel from fedoras own update program.

OK. Go ahead with it and reboot.
Do you have Nvidia driver from rpmfusion ? If not, check the tutorial in HowTo section and choose akmod between the two options available.

Did what you told me. Still the same problem, slow boot and the invalid pointer error.

Checking for module nvidia.ko: [60G[[0;32m OK [0;39m]

Yes, I used the nvidia guide for F11 in the Howto topic when I installed this system. :)

Hmm... Check https://bugzilla.redhat.com and see any reference to this issue.

Will do.

Thank's for your help. :)

Found a bugzilla note here: (If someone wants to read it also.)

Similar issue here, except my system fails to boot. My screen just starts flickering at "starting atd" and then hangs. All started last night after those updates. I have no problems whatsoever booting with the previous kernel (2.6.29.5-191).

Sounds like the repo that you get your video driver from hasn't updated for the new kernel. I downloaded the driver directly from nvidia.com so when I noticed that it was updating the kernel I set it to boot to the cli on startup. Then after everything was updated all I had to do was run the nvidia installer again for the new kernel and everything works great.

You obviously didn't see the Nvidia HowTo in tutorials section of the forums

That definitely seems like the issue... Looking thru RPMFusion though it appears as if they do have a driver compiled for the new kernel and it was built on 14 July....

Edit: Here's the link to package: http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/updates/11/x86_64/repoview/kmod-nvidia-2.6.29.6-213.fc11.x86_64.html

I don't like RPM fusion. Do you have some wisdom to impart, or do you just intend to mock me? I would like to point out that my way of doing it meant that I had no problems starting my desktop environment.

Just got some updates from RPM fusion for NVIDIA and this resolved the issue for the new kernel.

I have no problem over this kernel update. I used RPM fusion.
