This week I was fighting with VirtualBox 2.1.4 on Rawhide. It can be installed with --nodeps flag using rpm. Virtual machine executes, when you have uncommented VBOX_USE_INSERT_PAGE = 1 in /usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxdrv/Makefile and recompiled vbox kernel module using /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. But ... virtual machine always crashed after it's start up for me.

Today version 2.2.0-beta1 was released and problem with crashing on 2.6.29rc8 kernel was solved :-) So if there is anyone, who has similar problems as I, he/she can download new version here:
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/2.2.0_BETA1/

btw: uncommenting of VBOX_USE_INSERT_PAGE = 1 is still needed for 2.6.29-0.258.rc8.git2.fc11 kernel.

Is it fixed?

Here's the bug report for the old release.

As I wrote in BTW, workaround is still needed, so it's not fixed. But when you read bug report carefully, there is written, that it's kernel problem and patch was send to the kernel team. Now we can wait, when they include that patch.

I wonder if this new one can run Freebsd/pc-bsd finally? I'll try it.

UPDATE -- the VBox 2.2Beta booted Dragonfly BSD 2.2 on my machine but I gave up trying to install it (that's Dragonfly's fault, something wrong with the installer)
Freebsd 7.1 booted its iso file ok and installed ok.

This is good news for me because I'd rather try monowall and pfsense on a VM to see how it works before installing it on my firewall

Thanks for thr beta url and the F10 rpm.

The trick to the latest VB is the # of times rebooted.

1. New kernel is one reboot.
2 /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup is another reboot
A. This can be for existing or new kernel
B. The problem seems to be starting the netfltr module so always reboot after /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
3. When ready to open the gui, there may be a warning about vm file changes.
A. Click more, click backup, and the gui starts up.
B. If you then make changes to the VM settings, I recommend closing the gui and start it again before launching the VM. (the first time after after new VB update.)

Running 2.6.29-64.rc8.git4.f10.i686 in host and guest.
I have a double mouse pointer but it works.

Yesterday VirtualBox 2.2.0-beta2 was released and there is not needed to edit Makefile for vboxdrv. On F11 just install it with --nodeps and run ;-)

VBOX_USE_INSERT_PAGE does not exist in the Makefile anymore.

Creating group 'vboxusers'. VM users must be member of that group!

No precompiled module for this kernel found -- trying to build one. Messages
emitted during module compilation will be logged to /var/log/vbox-install.log.

Success!

Stopping VirtualBox kernel module [ OK ]

# I usually reboot and compile the kmoddrv again, then reboot again to make sure the netfltr is loaded.

If installing for the first time, say in F10, and some deps may be in updates-testing then do
yum localinstall /home/useryou/Download/VirtualBox-2.2.0_BETA2_45227_fedora10-1.i386.rpm --enablerepo=updates-testing --nogpgcheck

I normally just sign the package, then use yum to install/update it .

[leigh@localhost Desktop]$ rpm --addsign '/home/leigh/Desktop/VirtualBox-2.2.0_BETA2_45227_fedora10-1.x86_64.rpm'
Enter pass phrase:
Pass phrase is good.
/home/leigh/Desktop/VirtualBox-2.2.0_BETA2_45227_fedora10-1.x86_64.rpm:
[leigh@localhost Desktop]$ su -c 'yum update VirtualBox-2.2.0_BETA2_45227_fedora10-1.x86_64.rpm'

VirtualBox rpm package for F11 is now available from here:
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/2.2.2/

Now no tricks are needed ;-)

Has Virtual Box or KVM added a OpenGL driver yet?
I've been wanting to put KVM back on and try out this.
http://www.linux-kvm.org/page/HOWTO_VMGL

But if its going on 11 I'll just burn preview and install
