hi,
how can i open an ascii file in linux

i have a file with some commentary lines at the beginning and then i have data that are in an unprintable ascii format.

open a terminal and maximize its window: :cool:

$ vim filename.abc

bye!!!!:):):)

If it was created in notepad or other Windows (or Mac) editor, you can make a copy of the file first, then try running dos2unix on it. If that works, it's the easiest.

I don't quite understand the problem though--you say unreadable--you mean unreadable because it's raw data or unreadable because it was created under a different system, e.g., Windows notepad?

The first application I install on a new system, windows at work, linux at home and work.


yum install emacs

Then

emacs file.txt

However, religion aside, gedit ( Accessories | Text Editor ) is installed by default on fedora.
