I'm not sure exactly when, but after an upgrade and some time, I opened XMMS and the playlist just showed a bunch of boxes with dotted lines for the outline. I started XMMS in the command line with:

xmms&

And got this back when the playlist window opened:

Message: device: default

Any ideas on how to fix it? I did a search and what seemed like relative sites were in Russian or a similar language. Sadly I am ignorant of understanding them.
