I am initially assuming that I have had some kind of hardware 'glitch' with the boot disk, but here goes.

I just shutdown the system, opened the case, and removed a spare ethernet card. Closed it up and powered up, but it get far enough to display the work GRUB on the monitor and then stops. I checked all the cabling ect and nothing found.

When booting the recovery DVD, I can get into the filesystem with no 'apparent' issues, so assume it is a problem with the boot block.

Since all is lost if I don't do anything, can anyone explian how I can 'rewrite' the boot loader while in the recovery mode?

TIA,

Think I have my answer. Did some more searching and found a reference to someone in a dual boot mode got the same results. Aside from the root cause, they did a grub-install /dev/sda (or I did :p ) and that 'solved' my problem - for now!!
