On the desktop, Administrator->Preferences
Or you could edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf yourself

root and user passwords are usually different, you should have set the root password up first when installing...

What kind of monitor is that, max 1024x768? I have on-board NV C51 GeForce 6150 LE with 256 MB VRAM and it can get 1600x1440 (with nvidia proprietary driver), but I limit that to 1280x960 to get better performance.

I had the same problem as yours. but my friend told me to install something called kmod-nvidia from rpmfusion. And amazing... I have compiz running now and have 1280X1024 screen resolution on my 17" monitor.

The link I gave will install a script that will install the kmods for him... as well a lot of other useful stuff :)
