I can't login root at login screen either at first start up or when logging out a user.
i.e log out bob from the system tab then 'other user' 'root' enter 'password' enter.
It comes back with 'unable to authenticate user.

I am able to become root using su - and 'password' in a terminal

It accepts user passwords ok.

I am using an Acer Aspire 5720 laptop so there is no keypad

uname -a
Linux fred2.localdomain 2.6.27.9-159.fc10.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Dec 16 14:47:52 EST 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

any ideas welcome?

Regards Bob

Nothing's wrong. Believe it or not, it's a new feature. But you can disable it.
