Is there one? I'm a physics student and I liked using maple for checking if I've calculated things correct (read: I liked using maple for cheating). And I'd like to keep up with that practise.

It would have to have a PDE and ODE solver and decent linear algebra abilities.

I'm not into math but a friend of mine would have suggested octave:

Um...Doesn't maple have a linux native version? I know in my dept we use that. Or are you after a free as in beer alternative?

Others have given you some fine choices.

My two favorites are MuPAD and Maxima. They both use a textual display, unlike Mathematica.

Of those two I prefer Maxima because it is freely available for both Linux and Windows and because it can display graphical representations of the formulas when used in conjuction with 3rd party apps. After installing Maxima you can install TexMacs, a LaTex editor. It sees Maxima and makes a 'session' of it available in its the menu structure. When you enter your math the results are displayed inline graphically, and you can cut & paste to a graphical tool. Imaxima allows graphcial displays in Maxima itself, but is a little sticky to install. Maxima, and the 3rd party apps that adds graphical display abilities to Maxima are linked at http://maxima.sourceforge.net/relatedprojects.shtml

MuPad has some excellent documentation, but Maxima isn't too bad.

yes it does and it probably wouldn't even cost too much with the student licence but I think I'll try the free alternatives first.

I've got MuPAD installed now and I'll try the other ones suggested later if I don't like it.
