I have firefox 3.0.2 installed through an update and jre-6u7-linux-i586 installed but there is no java support for my browser. It seems fedora wants to use the gnu java but there is no plugins directory in /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.2

I just want to run java applets, what do I do?

Firefox will search for plugins in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins, not in /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.2 .

Check the HOWTO provided by Sun. You need create a symbol link from (Your JRE installed folder)/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins .
