I've read that mplayer is able to play DVD. But when I'll insert the DVD containing my film, it won't play anything. What is wrong?

Try

cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info

[root@localhost leigh05]# cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info
CD-ROM information, Id: cdrom.c 3.20 2003/12/17

drive name: sr2 sr1 sr0
drive speed: 48 48 52
drive # of slots: 1 1 1
Can close tray: 1 1 1
Can open tray: 1 1 1
Can lock tray: 1 1 1
Can change speed: 1 1 1
Can select disk: 0 0 0
Can read multisession: 1 1 1
Can read MCN: 1 1 1
Reports media changed: 1 1 1
Can play audio: 1 1 1
Can write CD-R: 1 1 1
Can write CD-RW: 1 1 1
Can read DVD: 1 1 0
Can write DVD-R: 1 1 0
Can write DVD-RAM: 0 1 0
Can read MRW: 1 1 1
Can write MRW: 1 1 1
Can write RAM: 1 1 1

Then change the setting in mplayer preferences to suit ( change /dev/dvd to /dev/sr* , in my case it was /dev/sr2 )

great help, thanks. i would add only that you add all video files to the playlist in mplayer. i won't divulge how long it took me to try that.

adding all the video_ts files to mplayer is not the proper way to play a dvd, as the menus etc won't work properly.

use the "mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device /dev/sr0" syntax.
