btw, i have to say that i can play all the formats he talks about, except for ".rmvb" files.... i found nothing to play those...(but i don't care a lot, as this format isn't widely used...:D)

Speaking of time involved: http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f9.html#mediaplayers http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-fedora9-gnome http://www.fedorafaq.org/ There's the answers; if you take the time to read them. Easier to post the links than to argue about who should look it up.

Have you added livna as a repository? Check the links for how to add it and then try again. Remember that Fedora is FOSS by default (Free & Open Source). That means that it will NOT include copyrighted codecs such as .wmv, .mp3, (etc) and their players from the installed repositories. That's why you should enable one 3rd. party repository which DOES provide those. Most of us use Livna.

are you behind a hardware router ?
and look at
yum --help
and
man yum
and try this

su -
yum clean all
yum makecache

then retry

su -
yum install mplayer mplayer-gui gecko-mediaplayer mencoder

then fallow http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f9.html#binarycodecs
to install the codecs

I guess it is lack of the rm codecs. Go to http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/news.html. Download the codecs you need and copy them to /usr/lib/codecs. It works on my fedora 9.

Thought EasyLife or DangerMouse script loads the codecs.
