After installing the latest driver for the GT8500 graphics card when I try to save the settings by clicking on the "Save to X configuration File" there is an error message "Unable to remove old X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup' ".
Has anyone else experienced this and if so did you find a solution?

Are you running it as a regular user or as root? It needs root privileges to write to that file location.

How do I get root privileges to write to the nvidia panel?

What happens if you become root before running 'nvidia-settings' command?

$ su -
<root password entry>
# nvidia-settings
<adjust and close>
# exit

I have to admit I am not all that familiar with the NVIDIA utilities. I usually start with their skeletal xorg.conf file and edit it in vi if I need twinview, etc.

EDIT :
Have you looked through Hlingler's NVIDIA Howto thread? That's a huge resource for people using NVIDIA cards. I've only scratched the surface...
