View Full Version : hostname confusion

I am a little confused about setting up the hostname. In particular I am not sure what the FQDN should be.

I have seen examples of :

ipaddress mybox.mydomain.com mybox
ipaddress server.domain1.com
ipaddress www.domain2.com

My questions are:
1) what purpose does the 'mybox', 'server', or 'www' play.
2) could you also just list the FQDN as say 'mydomain.com' or do you need something before it like the above examples.

I suppose you are referring to the /etc/host file content.

In that case, mybox is an alternative name for mybox.mydomain.com, that is you the commands:

ping mubox

ping mybox.mydomain.com

makes a ping to the same machine because the name resolve into the same ipaddress.

You don't need nothing before mydomain.com, but you must to define that name in one line, example:

ipaddress mydomain.com
