I am trying to see and save backups from my ipaq 4700 with ms mobile before I try to load familiar opie on it. when I try to open with adobe it gives me a mime error

Unable to open document
Unhandled MIME type: “application/octet-stream”

Is there a may to correct this error

Huh, i haven't understood your problem, at all.
Btw, i know that "application/octet-stream" is the MIME type of any binary file. So, you can find this MIME type for any files that hasn't its own MIME-type specified; although you can use it with any file format!

Can you tell me which Adobe software are you using? and what file format are you trying to open? (maybe post the file's extension or the first bytes of that file)

Yes.
Now i can tell you that .PBF aren't the same thing of .PDF
I can't tell you what software you need to open .pbf files (i don't know it!), but i can tell you that Adobe Reader won't open this kind of files.
So, it isn't a software error,...but it's you, that are using the wrong software to open that PBF file :)
