View Full Version : desktop icons disappeared under Fedora 9

I made the leap straight from Fedora Core 5 to Fedora 9, and I'm still gathering things together. One thing I can't seem to get back is that when I used to install a USB device (stick, camera, whatever), an icon would popup on my desktop and I could right click on that to gain access to the device or to remove it. Now that no longer happens, so I have to do things manually. I'd like it to come back more or less as it was.

I tried using the system settings tool to liven up the desktop settings, and my session crashed and would not come back until I edited some files in .kde/share/apps

Thanks.

KDE 4.0 is not very feature-complete nor stable.
You should look at the New Device Notifier plasmoid.

KDE 4.1 (which will be released in several days) will not have desktop icons anymore. Instead, there will be a much more flexible Folder View plasmoid. (http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2008/05/no-more-desktop-icons-in-41.html)
