Hello all... I am currently using Fedora 8, and I would like to take advantage of some of the latest releases out there, such as Firefox 3, OpenOffice 2.4, and Thunderbird 2.0.16. However, these latest updates are not in the repo's, so I would like to compile and upgrade/install them from the archive files you can get from their respective sites... Is there an easy "How To" to do this, or at least a general guide to installing programs in this mannor? Thank you!

For Firefox and Thunderbird, search the forum for "remi"

For OpenOffice, download the tarball and extract it, it's just a bunch of RPMs. You can download it with or without a JVM included. I've given instructions previously to install it. It's pretty simple.

No compiling required!
