Hi,
when i am trying to download updates in fedora9 it is taking longer seesions but not updating the system. moreover when i access sites in between it is hanging for some time.
i am using mozilla 3.

Could be due to several reasons, you may start with testing your DNS settings and name resolution. Your DNS servers should be stored in /etc/resolv.conf.
You may also run quick regression tests with the dig utility, for example:

dig www.google.com
Try the dig command with some other famous sites(or any sites you may select) and see if you can get any answers for your DNS requests.
Regarding the update process in specific, yum may be trying with some mirrors that may be down or offline. I think there's some ways to make yum prioritize mirror sites according to their availability(; I read it somewhere on the interent, or these forums, but I don't remember where exactly).
I recommend that you verify your network settings first, since as you've mentioned, you're experiencing long delays with loading webpages also.
