I am running fc2 on a compaq evo n180 (probably the problem right there) and everytime i bootup open a browser (mozilla, firefox) or gaim it locks up and after about 2 or 3 minutes it starts to function properly. I also have fc2 running on a desktop and this issue does not come up. Id fc2 picky about hardware or something?

It does not matter what kernal I am running and the laptop is completely up2date. Anyone else seeing issue slike this?

That sounds like a strange problem. Go into the console and become root. Then execute the commands (without the quotes) "/sbin/hdparm /dev/hda". That's to see if DMA is enabled on your hard disk drives. If its disabled, that could explain why your machine is slow.

Also, try updating the kernel to the latest version. You can just run up2date and let it update your kernel to the latest version.

Before I forget, what kind of processor does your laptop have?

It is running the newest kernel, and is running a pentium 3, 1 ghz. 512 mbs of ram. It is not with me right now but I will check what you suggested.

Thanks
