View Full Version : Fedora 9 Grub prompt problem

Just upgraded from Fedora 8, preupgrade, to Fedora 9. After first reboot system was fine, but after rebooting following a yum update, system stops at GRUB _ or grub prompt.

Using Fedora 9 Livecd, in terminal, I've used: grub-install and grub: root (hd1,0), setup (hd1).

While at boot time grub, when I manually type the grub.conf information the system will start up.

What do I need to do to automatically boot?

Any help will be appreciated.

The command you want to use is grub-install /dev/sda when you're working with system restore.

sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
There's probably 2 Fedora options in there. See if they are exactly the same except for the kernel versions. Maybe you could post the contents of the file here?

chroot /mnt/sysimage
grub-install /dev/sda

Using Fedora 9 LiveCD or allowing system to drop into grub prompt at boot, when is opportunity presented to chroot?

I am asking because it is my understanding that there is not a rescue CD per se for Fedora 9.

There is a rescue option on the DVD. I'll assume that there is the option with CD 1 also but I haven't bothered to burn any CD's. None on Live Gnome.

Add what I've highlighted in red and reboot. Select either of the 2 Fedora options from the grub menu.

OK. Still a grub prompt, but found that 'install' is available using syntax 'install [--stage2=STAGE2_FILE] [--force-lba] STAGE1 [d] DEVICE STAGE2.

Still working on correct parameters...

flashl

OK, used 'install /grub/stage1 d (hd1) /grub/stage2 p /grub/grub.conf'

No change.

Here's a listing of the boot directory, there is a second level of boot in the directory tree. Will I destroy any access to the system if I remove the directory tree and start over?

Huh? That's pretty frigged up there. I've never seen that before. Don't know what you should do in this case. If it were me I would re-install, but that's just me.

Reset.

Directory tree looks good. Still at grub prompt.

When at grub prompt issuing 'configfile /grub/grub.conf' brings system up.

Thanks patrox and Thanks to everyone for the help.

The answer for me was in this thread which discusses modifications to '/etc/fstab'
