I have created brand new liveusb loaded with F9-i686. On the initial boot I see this briefly:

SYSLINUX 3.6 .....
Unknown Keyword in Configuration File

Then it continues to the initial F9 splash screen. My first though is to look in grub.conf

When I look for /boot/grub/grub.conf the file does not exist, all I see is spash.xpm.gz.

1) where is grub.conf? and
2) Is this the right place to look for this Unknown Keyword?

You can find grub.conf in /boot/grub if you need to, but you'll have to su to root to read it. I'd suggest looking only at the lines above the splashimage, because of the timing. Note that (at least in mie) all the lines before the one giving the default option are commented out by having a # as the first character in the line. If that isn't true in yours, that might well be the issue. Good luck, and let us know how it turns out.
