All,

The system is fc8 on an IBM t41. Sound works on fc7. The install is an upgrade. ALSA has been removed and reinstalled. Below is the log output from pulse attempting to initialize:

1. where is the reference to hw:0 coming from?
2. where is pulse initialized?

May 13 06:36:40 T41b pulseaudio[3484]: alsa-util.c: Error opening PCM device hw:0: No such device
May 13 06:36:40 T41b pulseaudio[3484]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-alsa-source" (argument: "device_id=0 source_name=alsa_input.pci_8086_24c5_alsa_capture_ 0"): initialization failed.

May 13 06:36:40 T41b pulseaudio[3484]: module.c: Failed to load module "module-alsa-sink" (argument: "device_id=0 sink_name=alsa_output.pci_8086_24c5_alsa_playback_ 0"): initialization failed.

Thanks - Dan

The solution depends on whether you're an audiophile or not....

If not:
yum remove pulseaudio* paman padevchooser libflashsupportwill fix everything. You will also lose mplayer (if you have it) in the deal, but there's always Xine and VLC.

If so: perhaps someone else has suggestions....
