I am new user attempting to acclimate myself to Linux....

When I leave my computer on for any length of time, I get the log out menu in Gnome. I can hit cancel and everything goes back to normal. If the computer left on overnight, the next morning, I will have to hit cancel numerous times to get the screen to disappear.

It seems as though something is running in the background telling my computer to log off or shut down. I've tried restarting it, but it doesn't fix the problem.

Any Ideas?

Have you tried going to System > Preferences > Power Management and checking that you do not have something there enabled that would cause this when idle? Or right click the battery icon on your panel > Preferences to bring up the same dialog.

could you take a screen shot for us and post it up here? also take a look in your log file

su -
password prompt
cd /var/log
gedit messages

look for anything relating to shutdown of computer or anything relating to the time the messages pop up and the messages in the log. then post the relevant text up here. or you can post it all and we can sift through it for you :)
