View Full Version : Ugh.... What happened to my Internet?

30th June 2004, 12:41 PM
I was away this past weekend so I powered off my Fedora box. I powered it on and now... No internet what so ever. I can't ping or resolve any address. It is quite bizarre. The internet is provided via a router which is linked to a cable modem (WAN). My windoze XP box (also connected to the router) connects to the net without any issues. Nothing has been changed or altered. Any suggestions would be welcome.

A ping of localhost does respond without error.

I checked my /etc/resolv.conf and it contains the same name servers the XP box is showing...

Using Fedora Core 1.

Not sure if this is related, but the system seems particularly sluggish as well. Additionally it takes much longer to boot up than I recall...

It is like it got hit with a dummy stick while I was away...

A friend (with much stronger linux kung-fu) helped me out...

Useful things for testing...

-check if you can ping the router (if using DHCP)
-/sbin/ifdown eth0 (takes eth0 down)
-/sbin/ifup eth0 (brings it back up)

check out your settings here:

Thanks nIVEK!

Try pinging something on your LAN, like the router.

Check the physical connections.

Check the status of your nework interfaces by running /sbin/ifconfig Perhaps your network card wasn't brought up for some reason.
