I have read how you are supposed to unxip tars and then ./configure then make then make install and all those things. But every time i download a tarball and try to do all that either the tarball folder doesnt even have a configure file or when it does and i run it, after that when i try make and make install it says there is no such directory/command.

Some random thoughts about all that...

To compile software, you must select Software Development (http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f8/en_US/ch-packageselection.html) packages at installation time, or install them later.

After untarring, change directories in your terminal to the directory with the source files. It should have a file named Makefile in it. This is the directory in which to run the various compiling commands.

There is also usually a file named INSTALL which has specific instructions for compiling the software. Always read this file first. You will not do the same exact steps each time you compile something.

Run the command make -v to confirm that make is installed and see the version.
