Hey all,

First time Fedora user here! I've mainly used Ubuntu as my linux distro for a while. One issue I'm having is running software update in the terminal window.

Normally in ubuntu I did the "sudo aptitude update" and then "sudo aptitude upgrade" ....however...when I do it now it just doesnt recognise the command.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong?

While apt/synaptic is an available option in Fedora, the default package manager is yum. In a terminal, you'd first sign in as root (su -) and then use the command "yum update". More info here: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/yum/en/ and by typing 'man yum'.

Edit: If you prefer 'sudo' to 'su' , you can set it up as described here: http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f8.html#sudo

Darn, I keep thinking of things I should have put in this post! The equivalent to Synaptic in Fedora is Yumex. "yum install yumex" will give you a gui version that you might like.

cheers bob!

my software manager kept crashing (i'm connecting through a proxy) and for some reason the package manager just wouldnt retireve the data. It's been setup in Preferences>Internet & Network options.

Now all I need to hope for is my windows progs can run in wine!. cheers
