I often sit in my bed browsing on my laptop. While I have the lights off, I generally try to turn the brightness down to keep from overbearing on my eyes.

However, this seems to lower the contrast, making it harder for me to read text.

I had heard that on Macs there is a feature that inverts the color. Are there any such apps like this that we can use?

if by inverting color you mean displaying things in a "photo negative" way, a plugin included in compiz-fusion does this quite well. i believe contrast and color settings can also be set specifically by video card - i am using an nvidia card and the livna drivers include the ability to enhance colors if you want, among other things. all that said, i hate ever having the brightness at any less than the highest setting. hurts my eyes far more than having it bright would. but if that's what you want to do, hope one of these tips sets you in the right direction!
