[root@localhost ~]# mpd
Segmentation fault

I get this no matter what I do - install using yum or compile from source. I don't absolutely need MPD but I prefer using it over Rhyhmbox or Exaile. Any ideas to fix? Need more information?

Thanks in advance! :)

have you install mpc?

Nope. Should I? I know I had it installed in the past but I gave up on this problem for some time and removed both MPD and MPC.

What does
mpd --verbose say, anything?

Gives me this:

[root@localhost ~]# mpd --verbose
binding to any address
setFsCharset: fs charset is: UTF-8
libFLAC supports OggFLAC, initializing OggFLAC support
reading DB
Segmentation fault

Same error as a regular user, too.

Hmm, might be a problem with your MPD database, did you setup your music directory already? What about trying
mpd --create-db

Yeah, already ran that. :(

I just tried uninstalling and the compiling from source. I thought I'd done this before, successfully, and gotten a segfault. Now I'm having second thoughts, since I'm having difficulties. When trying to run the configure script I get this:

File Format Support:
ID3 tag support ...............disabled
mp3 support ...................disabled
Ogg Vorbis support ............disabled
FLAC support ..................disabled
OggFLAC support ...............disabled
Wave file support .............disabled
MP4/AAC support ...............disabled
Musepack (MPC) support ........disabled
MOD support ...................disabled
configure: error: No input plugins supported!
This is interesting because I have proper libs installed at least for Ogg, MP3, and ID3tag support, possibly even some of the others.

I guess I need the lib*-devel packages. Why is that? (Edit: because it says so in the manual! Sheesh I need to learn how to do this whole "reading" thing they tried to teach me in kindergarten) Let me try installing some of these and finish compiling .. I'll post back in a few minutes.

Ok, done compiling.

Segmentation fault

Okay so I deleted the database.

Now something with ALSA? Back into the config file ... <sigh>

WOOOOOOHOOOOOO! It's up and running. :D

Right now it's using OSS. I'll have to fiddle with the config file a bit more to see if I can get ALSA to work. But at least it works ... that's a great feeling. Thanks for all the help. :)

Glad you got it working, mpd is pretty sweet
