View Full Version : Fc8 Randomly freezing

I am running Fedora Core 8, and after running for about 10-15 minutes, it will start to
hang randomly. It freezes completely (except for the mouse) for about 30-45 seconds
and then everything is fine until the next hang.

During these hangs, the hard drive is not being used excessivly and I see no spikes in
CPU usage.

Also, this does not happen in text only mode, so perhaps a bug in Gnome?

Specs:

NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS
2.0 GB RAM
120 GB Hardrive
3.4 GHz Intel P4

I have found a few thread pertaining to freezes, but none were quite what I am describing. I tried a few "fixes" from the other threads, to no avail.

I would much appreciate any help, or even just a nudge in the right direction.

Thanks

Hello:
If you have not already done so, you might want to install the nvidia drivers for your video card. Here are a couple of guides :
http://dnmouse.webs.com/nvidiadrivers.htm
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f8.html#nvidia

If you open a terminal and log in as root
su -
then
tail -f /var/log/messages
it may show some more information / clues as to why you are experiencing freezes.

You may also want to have a look at all the services that you are currently running. Some or many may not be needed given your setup.
There a couple of guides located here.

I checked /var/log/messages, and found three errors that seemed like they could be involved:

Obviously the word 'Frozen' is what makes me think so. Now, I don't have much (read: any) experience with linux, but it seems that is is a problem with the Hard Drive?

Also, is there a way in Fedora to run a Hard Drive check?
