View Full Version : Two problems, ALSA and BT

Greetings!
A friend directed me here, for help.
I'm pretty much a Linux newbie, so please bear with me, if i ask any possibly retarded questions, or possibly posted this in the wrong forum. XD
(I'm not entirely unskilled though, i guess. Managed to find a workaround for installing F8, when Anaconda kept crashing, and i got ndiswrapper working)

My system runs pretty much stable, but i always run into two issues.

When i run a Bittorrent client, no matter which one, the whole system freezes, sooner or later. There's absolutely nothing suspicious in the logs, or anything, either.

The second problem is that ALSA hates me.
Sometimes (and almost every time the system froze because of the BT issue) it doesn't initialize right. The logs give me this:

Nov 14 13:10:40 localhost kernel: ALSA /var/tmp/bach-build/BUILD/alsa-driver-1.0.15/pci/intel8x0.c:564: codec_read 0: semaphore is not ready for register 0x2c
Nov 14 13:10:40 localhost kernel: ALSA /var/tmp/bach-build/BUILD/alsa-driver-1.0.15/pci/intel8x0.c:564: codec_read 0: semaphore is not ready for register 0x30
Nov 14 13:10:40 localhost kernel: ALSA /var/tmp/bach-build/BUILD/alsa-driver-1.0.15/pci/intel8x0.c:564: codec_read 0: semaphore is not ready for register 0x2e
Nov 14 13:10:40 localhost kernel: ALSA /var/tmp/bach-build/BUILD/alsa-driver-1.0.15/pci/intel8x0.c:564: codec_read 0: semaphore is not ready for register 0x3a
Nov 14 13:10:40 localhost kernel: ALSA /var/tmp/bach-build/BUILD/alsa-driver-1.0.15/pci/intel8x0.c:550: codec_write 0: semaphore is not ready for register 0x2a
Nov 14 13:10:40 localhost kernel: ALSA /var/tmp/bach-build/BUILD/alsa-driver-1.0.15/pci/intel8x0.c:550: codec_write 0: semaphore is not ready for register 0x2a
I can easily tell it didn't load, because i get a PC-Speaker beep at the login screen. When i reboot right from there, it usually works the next time, though.

I'm running F8 on a FSC Amilo A1630 notebook with
AMD Athlon64 3700+
1024 MB PC3200 DDR RAM
Ati Radeon Mobility 9700
RT2500pci WLAN chip (the default driver doesn't really work, so i'm using ndiswrapper)
ALC655 AC97 Audio (recognized as SIS SI7012 audio chipset, which i think is correct, and ALSA uses the snd-intel8x0 lib, which i believe is correct, too)

Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you very much!

Edit:
Fixed the ALSA problem by setting root's default audio device to OSS.
Apparently ALSA only messed up during the boot process. Since it's not used until i log in, it's working fine now.
