The laptop I am trying to install Fedora Core 6 onto does not have internet access.

It is a Dell inspiron 7000 with an intel pentium 2 processor, which i think is 500 mhz.

The fedora 8 live cd did not work, so I am downloading all the images for 6 to do a complete install.

questions:

1. Do i need to copy the downloaded files onto the laptops hard drive? Or can i simply burn the .iso images to the disks, and insert them into my other laptop to do the install.

2. Do i need to have a windows partition, or can i just have one partition for linux, and what kind of partition should it be?

3. Does anyone even know if this version of linux will work on that laptop....?

Hello Borse,

Actually, you only need the first three FC6 CDs to install a typical system with "Office and Productivity" and "Software Development".

You can burn the FC6 ISOs to CDs and install directly from them. Why not just do that? I didn't understand what you meant by your "other laptop". But anyway...

To do the Hard Drive alternative installation method...

It's probably simpler to copy the ISO files to a small FAT32 partition on your hard drive.

Leave the remainder of the hard drive as unpartitioned space. The Fedora installer (anaconda) will create the partitions Fedora needs.

You still need to be able to boot the kernel (vmlinuz) somehow to get anaconda up and running. You can create a boot CD by burning the first FC6 ISO to a CD, or by downloading FC-6-i386-rescuecd.iso (http://mirror.usu.edu/mirrors/fedora/linux/core/6/i386/iso/) and creating a System Rescue CD, or by downloading boot.iso (http://mirror.usu.edu/mirrors/fedora/linux/core/6/i386/os/images/) and creating a simple boot CD. Any of those will boot the computer and start anaconda.

The details of the Hard Drive alternative installation method for FC6 are in the installation guide (http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/fc6/en/sn-installing-from-harddrive.html).

Remember that FC6 is going off life support in December. That doesn't mean you can't use it, but you should know that.

I don't know if FC6 will work on that laptop (but that doesn't mean a thing).

Thank you very much, that's what i needed to know. I am almost done downloading all the .iso files, and i have my whole 10gb hard drive set up as unpartitioned space. So i'll just pop in the cd's and hope it works...
