This might be a dumb question, but I don't have a degree in computer science and thus don't know all the nuances of an OS. Anyways, whenever I open the Gnome System Moniter applet, it claims that I only have 372.1 MiB of RAM (btw what is MiB? Millions of Bytes as opposed to MegaBytes?) but I know that I physically have 512MB of RAM. Where'd the rest of my RAM go? Is the missing portion a special block of RAM reserved for the kernel or other OS use that is unavailable to the user and therefore not reported by the system moniter?

My guess is that you have shared video memory, this could account for losing 128mb of memory because it is dedicated to video rather than system memory. Also there may be some dedicated to another system resource or even a system process to account for whatever is left.
