Ok finally got Fedora 7 installed on a Dell Poweredge 860 server. Connected it to the network, and it's assigned itself a name from another computer on the LAN. After some searching, I found I need to change something in hostname and domainname? However when accessing these files I get a permission denied, even though I am logged in as root, so how can I change the name?

Also how do I assign a static IP to the sever?

As root or in a root terminal run system-config-network-gui. You can change the hostname on the DNS tab, also highlight the network interface on the devices tab and click on edit, you'll see where you can enter a static IP.

I'm not using the GUI. Simple text version

Just drop the -gui from the command and you should get a terminal version that can do the same thing. I haven't really used the text version but if you hunt around I'll bet the same features are there as in the GUI version.
