Can some one instruct me to set up a proxy server to:

1. To access messenger like msn messenger.
2. Could I set My Portable FireFox to use this proxy server.

I, and others too I think, will not assist in bypassing restrictions like this. Talk to whoever runs your network.

Firefox does indeed have a proxy connection option, however, in some Network tab of the preferences.

I assume you are on a network that restricts access to the outside world.. Find a port they allow to the outside world and run an SSH server on that port from your home.

Once you have an SSH server setup that you can connect to from your restricted network and you are good to go. Simply connect to your SSH server with the command

ssh -D 12345 your.server.name

This will allow your local machine to act as a SOCKS proxy and forward all requests through to your external machine over SSH.

Now simply configure firefox to use a SOCKS5 proxy (running on localhost:12345) and also configure firefox to do remote DNS resolution in about:config.

Also configure your IM client to use your SOCKS5 server running on localhost.
