View Full Version : Slow directory ?!?

I've got a Fedora 4 machine acting as a server.

Here are my partitions (df -h) :

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda3 225G 151G 63G 71% /
/dev/hda1 99M 13M 81M 14% /boot
/dev/sda1 184G 147G 28G 85% /sata2
/dev/shm 474M 0 474M 0% /dev/shm

There are 2 physical disks : the first has both "/" and "/boot", and the second is "/sata2". They are both SATA disks.

My symptom : the "/backup" directory on the machine is "slow". By slow, I mean that when I open up a shell and cd to that directory for the first time in a while, if I try to do an "ls -la", it'll take around 15-30 seconds for the machine to respond. The next times I issue that command, there is no delay in response. There are 139 files/subdirs in that directory.

The directory is also shared through Samba for my Windows machines. I also experience the delay when I access the directory (for the first time in a while) with one of my Windows machines.

I'm looking for troubleshooting steps that'll point me in the right direction as to what is wrong with this directory :-)
