Hello,

Tonite I helped a friend rebuilt the MBR on his new FC7 box. We did it over an Instant Messenger window, so some details might be a bit fuzzy. I had him boot the rescue cd (boot: linux rescue) then:

chroot /mnt/sysimage
grub-install /dev/sda

After a while we figure out that the /dev directory of sysimage was EMPTY  . so I proceeded to create sda using mknod, then the grub-install worked OK and he was able to boot his machine. :D

I have done a rescue procedure on FC4, never on F7, but the /dev directory of sysimage had the necesary devices for grub-install to work. Is this a new thing on F7? Or is it a bug?

One thing you could do is try the current rawhide test livecd
http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2007-September/msg00085.html

Install it and then do the rescue mode to repeat the problem.

If it is still there then file a bug so it will be fixed for later F8 releases.

Many of us would have no idea about doing what you did to get around the problem.

thanks,

SJ
