View Full Version : dissappearing terminal

So I loaded up FC6 today and there is something a bit unusual. My terminal does not work (gnome-terminal) and openoffice does not work. Yesterday they worked fine. In fact I used the command line to setup my display configuration for my dual screens. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for what could be "blocking" or preventing these programs from properly starting. When ever I try to open then it comes up with the "starting terminal", etc. Everything else works except for these two programs.

I have tried changing the settings on the icons. I have gone into /usr/bin and looked all the files. I have removed and reinstalled using yum. I have restarted 3-4 times. I have changed my display configuration back and still nothing.

I'm using FC6 x86_64 2.6.20.x mostly updated with yum (some errors). I can still access the terminal but I have to go to init 3 to do so (ctrl-alt-f4).

Thanks.

Alright. So I got terminal and openoffice to work when I completely change the settings back to one monitor. I am wondering if somebody could help figure out why terminal and openoffice don't work in dual screen mode. (my 7900gs was broken by the movers and I'm using a nvidia 6600 until my 8800gts arrives)

uname -a

Linux 2.6.20-1.2948.fc6 #1 SMP x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (this is dual head mode in which openoffice and the gnome terminal do not work)

I don't have any problems with openoffice or gnome-terminal when running my laptop with an external monitor in Xinerama mode. Try starting gnome-terminal from the command line so you can see any error messages it pukes up before it dies.
