How do you install VMware tools 6 on Fedora 7 running on VMware 6? The instructions in the user manual do not apply, and, I know that Fedora is not a supported OS on VMware, but I was feeling lame and decided to give it a try. Anyway, they said something about needing gcc to build kernel headers, but I got that done, but the problem is it says that the kernels do not match the OS's version number (2.6.22-1.fc7-i686 or something like that). What do I do?

post the output from

yum list kernel kernel-devel

kernel.i686 - 2.6.22-1.3194.fc7 - Installed

kernel.i586 - 2.6.22.1-41.fc7 - updates
kernel.i686 - 2.6.22.1-41.fc7 - updates
kernel-devel.i586 - 2.6.22.1-41.fc7 - updates
kernel-devel.i686 - 2.6.22.1-41.fc7 - updates

oh yeah and what about the gcc thing (it says 'None of the prebuilt kernels match the kernels on your computer' or something like that and 'You need a gcc compiler installed on your system. Proceed?)

you need the kernel-devel to build

su
wget http://fedora.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/Fedora/kernel-devel-2.6.21-1.3194.fc7.i686.rpm
rpm -i kernel-devel-2.6.21-1.3194.fc7.i686.rpm

then try building again
