View Full Version : [SOLVED] VirtualBox (and maybe others) GUI

I just reinstalled Fedora 7 so that I could repartition my system drive more effectively (giving more to Fedora and less to Windows), and am currently reinstalling all the applications I use.

On reinstalling VirtualBox, I thought the GUI looked a bit wrong, and finding a screenshot I had taken before, it is different (not as nice) as it was last time. I've attached screenshots of the GUI before and after reinstalling.
Does anyone know what package(s) I have to install to make it look as good as it did before?

I know this is a minor thing but it'd be nice to know how to fix it.

Thanks in advance for any help.

OK, looking at the VirtualBox user manual it says you need to have:

Qt 3.3.5 or higher;
SDL 1.2.7 or higher (this graphics library is typically called libsdl or similar).
I only had qt (1:3.3.8-4.fc7) installed, so I tried installing qt4 but it didn't make any difference.
Maybe I have to make it use qt4 instead of the earlier version, but I really don't know how to do that.
And for SDL, I could only find SDL (1.2.11-2), SDL_gfx (2.0.13-8.fc7) and SDL_image (1.2.5-4.fc7); no "libsdl" but I don't think that that's the problem as the VirtualBox user manual also says:

Note: To be precise, these packages are only required if you want to run the
VirtualBox graphical user interfaces. In particular, VirtualBox, our main
graphical user interface, requires both Qt and SDL; VBoxSDL, our simplified
GUI, requires only SDL. By contrast, if you only want to run the headless
VRDP server that comes with VirtualBox, neither Qt nor SDL are required.
Thanks again for any help.

Excuse me, but looking at your screenshots I can't see anything wrong in your VB GUI after reinstalling. The only difference is that you have not created any virtual machine yet, isn't it?
On the other hand,

I only had qt (1:3.3.8-4.fc7) installed, so I tried installing qt4 but it didn't make any difference.
Maybe I have to make it use qt4 instead of the earlier version, but I really don't know how to do that.
And for SDL, I could only find SDL (1.2.11-2), SDL_gfx (2.0.13-8.fc7) and SDL_image (1.2.5-4.fc7);
I think you have higher versions of qt and SDL both.

Forgive me if I didn't understand your problem. :confused:

Thanks for having a look and replying zaog.

As I mentioned it's a minor difference, but the GUI now (without a virtual machine when I took that screenshot), is much blockier and a horrible dark grey colour, compared to the sleeker, light-coloured one I had before.
If you look at the buttons, tabs, and menu bar, the difference is more pronounced.
I've attached another screenshot of it now, where you can definitely see the difference in the highlighted virtual machine.

Thanks again.

OK. You're right! Now I see the difference! :D

But I still think it doesn't matter with missing or early packages (I could be in error, of course). After reinstalling Fedora, did you notice graphical differences only in VBox? Fedora (I suppose you're using Gnome) applications works fine?

Excuse me for my curiosity, I recently installed VBox...

If you change the fedora theme it will change the look of the GUI's

VBox is the only app in which I can see a difference, all the gnome apps and Firefox seems fine (that's all I've been using so far).

I don't think it's to do with the theme, as I didn't change the theme last time.
But thanks for the reply.

I just installed Compiz Fusion (which I can't get to work properly, but that's a separate issue) and it fixed the VirtualBox GUI. :)

So basically, I needed one of the following packages:
