View Full Version : compiz (core) - Fatal: No composite extension

Hi,

I'm running F7 and using gnome on my desktop. I've an ATI radeon 7000/VE graphics card and am trying to run compiz on my machine for the first time.

I've installed the compiz-fusion packages from the kagesenshi repo. After I issue the command:

$ compiz
compiz (core) - Fatal: No composite extension

I obtain the above error. I've never dealt with any of these desktop effects programs before so please pardon my ignorance. I am unable to resolve the above error and don't really know what is causing it. Could anyone please help me with this.

Thanks,
bharat211

Option "Composite" "False"

add that line to your xorg.conf file in the extensions section. If there is not one you will need to create it it like this.

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "False"
EndSection

I already have that line in my xorg.conf file. Actually, I tried setting that to "Enable" and restarted X server. I was able to start compiz this time but now all my windows have become sticky (can't move/resize them) and there is no title bar for any of the windows. I can't really navigate through any of them either. Furthermore, I can't switch between my virtual desktops anymore either.

Any ideas?

show me the output of:

glxinfo

also does glxgears output any errors?

also check this thread for some good information.

leigh seems to have some very good knowledge on these types of problems.

glxgears works fine showing me three moving gears of different sizes and colors. No errors. I've looked at Leigh's thread, but it involves installing fglrx drivers which are not supported for my video card. I don't really know what I need to run compiz.

Any help would be appreciated.

direct rendering: No

that line tells me that your drivers are not installed correctly and that your 3d acceleration is not working, thus being the reason you have no rotatable cube or composite window frames.

what drivers did you install? Where did you get them( yum? website?)? were they rpm packages or a binary package?

You claim to have a ATI card but your output says nvidia

OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: NVIDIA NV34MAP OpenGL Engine
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 NVIDIA-1.4.18)
OpenGL extensions:

If you have a ATI check xorg.conf and edit the device section to this

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "radeon"
Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "1"
Option "AccelDFS" "1"
Option "AGPMode" "1"
Option "AGPFastWrite" "1"
Option "GARTSize" "64"
Option "ColorTiling" "1"
Option "RenderAccel" "on"
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" "true"
EndSection

Then restart X

you could also post

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and

su -
lspci |grep VGA

Hi Leigh,

here is the output of lspci:

[root: ~] lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE]

and my xorg.conf file is attached to this post.

I'm currently at work and am not sitting in front of my computer at home, so I won't be able to test your previous suggestion of editing the device section until later in the evening, i.e., about two hours later. In the meanwhile, please look at the attached xorg.conf and let me know.

Thanks to both FriedChips and you for trying to help me with this thing.

Edit: forgot to upload the xorg.conf file. :)

Hi Leigh,

I tried your suggestion and made the changes to my xorg.conf file as you suggested. Now, when I enable desktop effects, it does so. But I still don't have any borders to my windows, and I still can't resize or move my applications. No cube either.

Any suggestions?

update on things:

I restarted X server and now I switched to emerald window decorator, and then started compiz. Now, I have a cube with all the effects that go along with it. But, I still don't have a title bar, and can't resize things by clicking on the bottom right corner of a window. Also, can't move the windows except by using alt+f7. Yes, another thing, whenever a new window is launched it gets placed under my top gnome-panel.

Any advice on how to fix this?

the **** works. You are awesome Leigh. Thanks!

Now what I really want to know is, what was the real problem and what exactly was the fix?

Compiz-fusion has its own emerald packages and wont work with the fedora emerald versions.

you also referred to some changes to my xorg.conf file. Could you please explain the changes you asked me to make under the Devices section?

Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "1"
Option "AccelDFS" "1"
Option "AGPMode" "1"
Option "AGPFastWrite" "1"
Option "GARTSize" "64"
Option "ColorTiling" "1"
Option "RenderAccel" "on"
Option "XAANoOffScreenPixmaps" "true"

what exactly do those above options do? Could you please let me know?

P.S.: And yes the borders work fine now. Thanks.

you will have to google this option as I am not sure of it function ( I got it from the beryl site )

Option "XAANoOffScreenPixmaps" "true"

the rest are

Option "AGPMode" "integer"
Set AGP data transfer rate. (used only when DRI is enabled)
1 -- x1 (default)
2 -- x2
4 -- x4
8 -- x8
others -- invalid

Option "ColorTiling" "boolean"
Frame buffer can be addressed either in linear or tiled mode. Tiled mode can provide significant performance benefits with 3D applications, for 2D it shouldn't matter much. Tiling will be disabled if the virtual x resolution exceeds 2048 (3968 for R300 and above), if option UseFBDev is used, or (if DRI is enabled) the drm module is too old.
If this option is enabled, a new dri driver is required for direct rendering too.
Color tiling will be automatically disabled in interlaced or doublescan screen modes.
The default value is on.

Option "AGPFastWrite" "boolean"
Enable AGP fast write. Enabling this option is frequently the cause of instability. Used only when the DRI is enabled.
The default is off.

Option "EnablePageFlip" "boolean"
Enable page flipping for 3D acceleration. This will increase performance but not work correctly in some rare cases, hence the default is off.

Option "RenderAccel" "boolean"
Enables or disables hardware Render acceleration. This driver does not support component alpha (subpixel) rendering. It is only supported on Radeon series up to and including 9200 (9500/9700 and newer unsupported). The default is to enable Render acceleration.

Option "AccelMethod" "string"
Chooses between available acceleration architectures. Valid options are XAA and EXA. XAA is the traditional acceleration architecture and support for it is very stable. EXA is a newer acceleration architecture with better performance for the Render and Composite extensions, but the rendering code for it is newer and possibly unstable. The default is XAA.

Option "AccelDFS" "boolean"
Use or don't use accelerated EXA DownloadFromScreen hook when possible (only when Direct Rendering is enabled, e.g.). Default: off with AGP due to issues with GPU->host transfers with some AGP bridges, on otherwise.

thank you very much Leigh for your help and explanation. Now my desktop has all the fancy features. And so, I'm off to get me Bioshock.

Thanks again,
