anyone know of a good unrar program? i currently have the commandline one that you type unrar then your file name. I used to have ark before on ubuntu and i really liked that, anyone know how to get that one on fedora?

the unrar program i currently have seems to give nothing but errors while decompressing...

Ark is included in one of the KDE packages. I think it's in kdeutils.

Hello Fittersman

I can confirm that Ark in the kde utils package does not deal with rar files as it is installed.

I've just downloaded and installed unrar from livna though and it integrated into konqueror instantly so that I no longer needed Ark, I could just right click on the rar file and select "Extract".

I've no doubt Ark would work as well now.

I'm running 32 bit fedora, but I've just checked 64bit Livna and unrar is there.

how do you use ark once you have it installed? its not in the applications menu...

and, when i right click and extract i get this:

Hello Fittersman

Once it is installed, Ark is on the Utilities menu for me in the File subsection.

yum install kdeutils

will get it for you if you haven't got it already.

Similarly, if you have already got Livna installed:

yum install unrar

should fetch you that.

If you haven't got Livna installed as a repository then this howto:

http://www.fedoraguide.info/index.php/Fedora7#Livna

will tell you how to do that. That last should be independent of if you have 64bit or 32bit fedora.

yum install yumex

will give you a nice graphical interface to yum where you can see what is available as well as select, install, upgrade and uninstall.

What menus do you have then.

When we talked yesterday I don't think I even asked what desktop you are using. I presume you are using KDE, or do you have Gnome?

Have you tried unrar in the terminal

cd /path/to/rar
unrar e nameoffile.rar

Hello if its any help what i do, and have never had errors yet extracting rar files is to just right click on the rar file and extract here assuming you have installed unrar from livna, as regards command line i have never done it as i use rar files rarelely, if it any help as some of your posts seem a bit confusing etc, though its probably me and to many pints.

su
rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-7.rpm
yum -y install unrar

Hello Fittersman,

Well, it's not surprising you can't find the Utilities menu and Ark, they are both KDE.

I'm just starting up a Gnome machine and I'll be back soon.

Well, in Gnome, with unrar installed, if I right click on the file I get an option to "Open with 'Archive Manager'" and if I do, I get the option to "Extract".

What do you see in Gnome when you right click on your rar file?

And I've just tried the leigh123@linux method and that works as well (not that I ever doubted).

I think Fittersman we are going to need exact circumstances here. When you say it doesn't work, exactly what happens? Do you get any error messages?

Fittersman
20th August 2007, 11:43 PM
well when i right click -> extract here i get an error saying "an error occurred while extrcting files" and there is a button "command line output", i click that and it says:

unrar: invalid option -- o

Let's just make sure you have unrar installed.

At a command prompt type:

rpm -q unrar

and see what it says

Forgive me if I'm being stupid or anything (that is, if unrar is part of WinRar), but wouldn't it be easier just to install WinRar? It only runs in the command line natively, but according to the Wine website, the Windows GUI version is supposed to run flawlessly under Wine

I think for gnome you need file-roller as an archivator. You can try "yum install file-roller" or yum install fileroller", if it's not working then use rpm.pbone.net to search for file roller. After installation of file roller you should have a graphical interface for rar archives. You can also get unace for ace archives and zzlib for zip archives.

Hello gala_dragos

I don't think it should be that, I have a basic install of Gnome on Fedora here and File Roller is installed by default. It's still going to be a graphical frontend to unrar though.

Hi Fittersman,

If you read this. File Roller should be in the Gnome Applications Menu - Accessories - Archive Manager.

I've used it in my system to unrar a file as I have ARK in KDE and the basic unrar command in a terminal window.

Sorry if that's not much help, but I didn't want you chasing down yet another program when the basic one (unrar) doesn't work.

Sorry about you're problem. My unrar program works. I have installed it from freshrpms repo. I am a KDE user so my gnome knowledges are limited. You can try uninstalling the rpm and install unrar rpm from another location. I had some problems with livna before, it replaced half of xine's plugins an left me with no movies.

Good luck.

I have unrar 3.7.5-1 lvn7 installed. I use Gnome and my unrar works fine too. Simply "right-clicking" file I want to unrar and selecting "extract here" I obtain file/folder uncompressed.

well what the heck is wrong with my fedora install then :/

ill try the uninstall - reinstall, that might work, but i dont know how to uninstall it...

well i figured out that SElinux wasnt allowing me to install winrar, so i have that installed now, but it keeps giving me the error:

! Cannot open [my file].rar
! Access denied

or if i go file --> open archive then browse for my file and find it, it tells me that the path does not exist.

but, i would rather have unrar working than winrar, but i would also rather have winrar working than nothing...

try this at command prompt please "rpm -q --whatprovides file-roller" this will tell you if you really have file rolller installed. it's output should look like this:

"[something@host ~]$ rpm -q --whatprovides file-roller

if it doesn't then do "yum install file-roller"

when you reinstalled the rpm did you used the command "yum install unrar" ? or did you reistalled an already downloaded rpm? if you did the later then your rpm it's probably corrupt. you should use the rpm directly from livna repo through yum. alternatively you can change your repo to something else like freshrpms.net . to get yum acess for this repo install the rpm found here http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrpms/fedora/linux/7/freshrpms-release/freshrpms-release-1.1-1.fc.noarch.rpm then you can uninstall unrar and run "yum install unrar" which should direct you to freshrpms

my unrar works under gnome too (through file-roller). I've just tested it. I install both desktops by default because sometimes i need something from the other.

good luck

like it saids ! unrar has no option -c , use it without it! type "unrar --help" for a list of options. Is it working through file-roller or ark? if not there are other front ends to unrar like 7zip.

Yum had "nothing to do" because it couldn't find the package named 7zip. The correct package name is p7zip (and p7zip-plugins). ;)

Ah! This is the part that will probably frustrate you :p
Archive Manager (file-roller) should handle them automatically once the package is installed ;)

Or else:
From a command line, the command name is 7z - just type that for options or else go to file:///usr/share/doc/p7zip-4.44/MANUAL/index.htm to read the "manual".

dude, i am not the problem, i have done everything that has been suggested to me, i do not understand why every forum has a flamer, there is no point to it. obviously there is some weird problem with my computer because i have tried 3 different rar archives (one of which i have tested on another computer and it proved to unrar easily)

it should not matter that it has taken 50 posts to try and fix a problem, this is a FORUM, people generally come to these places to get HELP. If you are not going to offer any advice go somewhere else.

This is the correct output. Even if you don't put any argument on the command line to unrar, it should still show the "version" of unrar at least.
UNRAR 3.70 beta 7 freeware Copyright (c) 1993-2007 Alexander Roshal
The fact it gave you

unrar: Archive not specified
means that you have an incompatible or corrupt version of unrar on your system. I don't know where you got it from, but I doubt it's from Livna.

What is the output of this command to remove the unrar distribution from you system?

rpm -e unrar
Now, to install unrar from Livna (include the output please) :

yum install unrar-3.7.5-1.lvn7
If there are no errors, then executing just unrar from a command line should output the version and a list of usable options for unrar.

At a command line, does whereis unrar give the following result?

unrar: /usr/bin/unrar /usr/share/man/man1/unrar.1.gz
And /usr/bin/unrar by itself at the command line still gives an error?

I've attached the rarLabs version of unrar to this post. Extract the contents to a testing directory. It should contain a "rar" directory. At a command line, CD to the "rar" directory in the testing directory and type ./unrar (it should just output the version and available options). Whatever you do, DO NOT type "make" in that directory.

Does that one work? If it does, then the 64bit version doesn't like your system for some bizarre reason and we'll need to try a different tact.

Ah hah! I think I see what the problem may be... Change the name of the
/usr/local/bin/unrar file to
/usr/local/bin/unrarbad. Double check it by doing a whereis unrar again and make sure it does NOT mention /usr/local/bin/unrar. If that works, then just try typing unrar at a command line. If that works (gives you a version and options), then it may be the unrar executable file in
/usr/local/bin was causing you problems.

See if you can extract a rar using the desktop instead (right-lick a ".rar" file and click "extract"). Hopefully it now works ;)
