i want to use yahoo messenger in linux fedora 6 , i have searched and i found that Giam ( pidgin) can be messenger for yahoo , msn , ....

i have tried to install pidgin ( when i am connected to the net)

but am getting the following error "Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: core"

[root@mypc yum.repos.d]# yum install pidgin
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Setting up Install Process
Setting up repositories
Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=core-6&arch=i386 error was
[Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')>
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: core
[root@mypc yum.repos.d]#

so how to fix the above error,

whether pidgin allow me to enter to the yahoo chat rooms , if not is there any other messenger which i can use it and i can get the yahoo chat rooms

You can try a:

yum clean all

(general fix for a lot of yum ills).

It may also be that the mirrors were busy at that particular time (this in not uncommon).

Ok, the url you posted is valid(I can reach it). Try it from your Firefox and make sure you can reach it (eliminate DNS problem etc).

Well at least it is more interesting that usual. Try:

yum info yum -C

and post back your results.

Ok, if it were an internet problem you would have gotten:

[root@localhost ~]# yum info yum -C
Loading "protectbase" plugin
Loading "installonlyn" plugin
Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: fedora

Because when you did a yum clean all it emptied the cache.

It may be a corrupt rpm db.

rpm --rebuilddb

See how that works.

The more stuff you have installed, the longer it will take. I would let it run until it finishes or until top shows it as zombie(should not happen). It may take overnight.

For some reason I am haveing the same problem. I can't use any internet applications to connect to the internet, It gives the same message as posted above. I think this all happened after i tried to install a plugin, could this be the problem? I tried the above methods and it didnt have any effect. Is there something else i could try?
