I notice that for very small updates (possibly few KBs) done even within 15-30mins, total download of 6MB occurs for each "yum update" command.

Can this be avoided? Or Can I configure it to be done once in - say - 3 hrs only.

In /etc/yum.conf,
metadata_expire=2592000

Will probably never update the metadata cache.

I don't remember if the number is minutes or seconds, but you can adjust it as desired from time to time depending on whether you want it to read from the metadata cache or not.

It's in seconds.

I do not recommend that i'd suggest put that in the specific repo, eg the fedora repo, which stays constant
the fedora-updates repo keeps changing.. i'd not recommend that for any updates repo
