Not sure what you are asking but could it be a kernel config? Check a few entries in your current kernel config .config file, such as:
CONFIG_FB=
CONFIG_FB_VESA=
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=

I wrote up kind of a mini-howto on this a few months ago:

Well simply, I am running terminal, I have not got X installed. so I use consoel onyl. But I want to be able to use FBI which is a program that lets you view images in the console. But I need access to FB(0) which is a device. Now I presume I need to set up my Frame buffer so I can use this application.

RupertPupkin,
Followed your guide to the letter. In FC8 it still doesn't work. No boot penguin, no fb0 afer boot(even doing the mknod). I'm using a samsung q1 with intel 915. I'm attempting to get Qingy working which compiled and installed fine using yum to install directfb and directfb-devel. Note this is an LVDS screen running in a non-vesa 800x480 mode. I suspect this is the main problem. Suppose I should head on over to the q1 and post dmesg, lspci, and lsmod.
