for some reason when I have multiple firefox windows open, it merges them into one tab in the panel, I changed it not to do that on windows someway, but am not able to find this setting on linux firefox, any ideas?

In KDE right click on the panel > Panel Menu > Configure panel > Taskbar. Select 'never' against Group Similar Tasks

Thanks for that info. I had no clue that it was so easy. Xfce also has a similar option in the tasklist. I will try this the next time it bothers me.

In GNOME right click on the panel > Preferences > Window grouping > Never group

You place the mouse over the indicator mark that is immediately to the left of the "Open Windows List" and right-click the mouse. Then click on preferences. Then "Window List Preferences" will pop up. Check "Never Group Windows".
