Hi. I'm running Fedora 7 x86-64. Out of a habit of using a command line, I generally fire up firefox and pidgin from a terminal window. Sometimes, if I close the terminal window from which firefox and pidgin were started, both crash. Pidgin simply logs me out of all IM servers and goes into a state which cannot be recovered without restarting. Firefox on the other hand simply crashes.

I also noticed that a series of messages are echoed on the terminal window after I start pidgin:

[root@dirac ~]# pidgin &
[1] 3689
[root@dirac ~]# libnm_glib_nm_state_cb: dbus returned an error.
(org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files

Is this a bug with pidgin and/or firefox or is something wrong?

For that error, are you not running the NetworkManager service? You can check using the 'service NetworkManager status' command.

No I am not running it, it causes problems with the ipw3945 (wireless) daemon. Should I be running it?

Pidgin never worked for me, it always crashed with the error you mentioned whenever I started it. I fixed it up downloading the source and compiling it myself. Never had any problem after that.

I would recommend paco for you.
http://paco.sf.net

$ sudo vi /usr/bin/smi

#!/bin/sh
sudo paco -lD make install

$ sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/smi
