ok i have the following : My Fedora is all on /dev/sdb5 and i have defined
/dev/sdb1 to be mounted in /Downloads

Here is my fstab

LABEL=/ / xfs defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot1 /boot ext3 defaults 1 2
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /Downloads ext3 defaults 1 2
/dev/sdb2 swap swap defaults 0 0

I have also set permission of /Downloads
ls -ld /Downloads

drw-rw-rw- 2 krell krell 4096 2007-07-03 08:14 /Downloads/

But when I try to copy a file this happens:

cp vlc-log.txt /Downloads/
cp: cannot stat `/Downloads/vlc-log.txt': Permission denied

I think I am missing something basic here but I can't think of what
is it possible LVM has screwed something up? (the partions /sdb1 was part of an old volume
now deleted)

Any ideas?

Hello:
try
chmod 766 -R /Downloads
or you can have a browse through here: chmod (http://www.ss64.com/bash/chmod.html)

In order for a process to enter a directory, the execute bit must be set on that directory at the permission level needed by the process (be it user, group, or other).
